TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNICATION

Zaporizhzhya region has a developed transport system. Favorable geographic position, high level of economical and social development and density of population all together have contributed to the development of different means of transport, such as: railway, automobiles, water carriage and aircrafts.

The total length of roads are: railway – 1320 km ., automobile – 7000 km. (95,5% hard cover). 1093 km of roads are of state importance. Several roads of great signifi cance go through the territory of the region:

  1. Odessa-Melitopol-Novoazovs'k;
  2. Kharkiv-Simferopol-Sevastopol;
  3. Borispil-Dnipropetrovs'k-Zaporizhzhya.

The wide rail way network connects all industrial centers of the region with other Ukrainian cities, CIS countries and West European countries. The distance between Zaporizhzhya and Kyiv is: by railway – 715 km, by car – 618 km.

The large part of cargo and passenger transportation is carried out by motor-vehicles and by railway transport. The number of agencies providing international truckage is constantly increasing.

According to the results of the year 2005 – 21.6 million tons of goods have been transported by different means of transport: railway – 16.2 million tons (75.1%), motor-vehicles – 4.51 million tons (20.9%), water-carriage – 824 400 tons (3.9%) and by air – 21 600 tons (0.1%).

A large navigable artery – the Dnipro river, which flows from the north to the south, plays an important role in Zaporizhzhya transportation system. It connects Zaporizhzhya not only with northern and southern regions of Ukraine and ports of the Black and Azov seas but also with 15 countries on basins of the Danube and Main rivers and also with Russia, Poland, and Belarus.

The signify cant part of freight flow in the region passes through Zaporizhzhya River Cargo Port, which specializes in industrial, including metallurgical, cargos processing.

Berdians'k seaport (on the Azov Sea ) is a marine gate to Zaporizhzhya region. Terminals and other port facilities allow to receive and store all kinds of cargoes (except bulk cargo) and to service all types of ships including river ships and ocean liners. Cargo can be delivered by the railway from the port to any region of Ukraine.

An important role in the regional transport system belongs to Zaporizhzhya international airport, which holds one of the leading places in Ukraine by the passenger flow. Zaporizhzhya airport is one of the few profitable airports and constantly increases its service range. Berdians'k international airport is included in the structure of the state owned enterprise “The Airport of Zaporizhzhya”.

Such companies as “Lufthansa”, “Austrian Airline Group” and “Eurowings” opened their offices in Zaporizhzhya region. All kinds of communication are developed in the region.

Introduction of modern information technologies and the post office equipment makes it possible to provide email and hybrid mail services, account operations and information services.

Zaporizhzhya region has a wide telephone network. Mobile and paging service companies are actively growing. Digital telephone stations have been implemented in the city of Zaporizhzhya.

“On-line” Internet service is available in all spheres of activities. There are several powerful e-mail servers. By the amount of stationary telephones provided to the population Zaporizhzhya region holds one of the leading places among other regions of Ukraine.
